JOHN
ALLEN STEPS DOWN AS CHAIRMAN TO CONCENTRATE ON MANAGEMENT |
| |
An
abridged article from the Walsall Advertiser by Neil Rose (Sports
Editor):
Rushall Olympic may still have silverware to play for this season
but they are already planning ahead for the 2004/05 league campaign.
The
Pics take on Stratford Town tonight in the Polymac Services
League Cup Final as they bid to win the competition for a second
time in three years. Reclaiming the trophy would provide a happy
end to what has been a mixed season for Rushall, who had to
settle for a mid-table finish in the Alliance. That has been
partly due to a cost-cutting exercise, which saw a number of
established players leave the club to be replaced by new faces
coming through the youth ranks. That has helped the club pay
for new Conference-standard dressing rooms, which will be built
at Dales Lane during the summer. However, manager John Allen
has now decided to reinvest in the playing side during the summer
in a bid to build a squad good enough to end the club's long
wait for promotion. To focus his efforts on the task in hand,
Allen has also decided to step down as club chairman and is
appealing for a local businessman to come in and fill the role.
"John
feels his role as chairman was interfering with his job as team
manager, which is what he wants to be first and foremost," club
secretary Pete Athersmith explained. "We are now looking for
a local businessman with a strong interest in football to become
the new chairman, to invest in the club and help us bring in
the quality players we need to fulfill our aim for next season
- to win the league."
The
restructuring has already begun with Allen currently in talks
to bring in a couple of experienced players to add to his youthful
squad. The main target is a prolific and powerful striker, with
Athersmith admitting that Rushall's season had been undermined
by a lack of goals. "If we had (Willenhall's) John Quilt in
our team this season, we would have gone up," he claimed. "The
defence and midfield have been solid, we just haven't been able
to take our chances."
Anyone
interested in taking up the chairman's position at Rushall Olympic
should call Pete Athersmith on 07909 792422 or contact the club
via the web site.
Rushall
will entertain Walsall in a pre-season friendly on Saturday
31st July.

FIRST
TEAM END LEAGUE CAMPAIGN WITH A DISAPPOINTING DEFEAT |
| |
The
first team ended their Alliance campaign with a visit to Studley
and disappointingly went down by two goals to one. An inconsistent
season was perfectly summed up at The Beehive where Rushall
took an early 3rd minute lead through the in-form Kirk Maragh
(his third goal in three games) and then proceeded to miss several
opportunities to extend their advantage, before defensive frailties
saw them tumble to defeat in the second half. Click

YOUTH
TEAM END CAMPAIGN IN STYLE WITH SIX GOAL WIN |
| |
The
youth team travelled to take on Atherstone United in their final
game of their Midland Floodlit Youth League Western Division
campaign and romped home to a superb 6-1 victory to confirm
their mid-table placing. Rushall's highest victory since the
reformation of the youth section was achieved thanks to a hat-trick
from James Francis and one each from James Allen, Kurt White
and Anthony Keegan, his first goal in probably his last game
in an Olympic shirt. The lads were simply too quick, too strong
and too well organised for their opponents in a game played
at Bolehall Swifts' ground.

TEAM GIVE NEIGHBOURS A HELPING HAND |
| |
The
first team entertained third placed neighbours Willenhall Town
and went down by a 2-1 margin thanks, on the whole, to some
overly charitable defending. The visitors top scorer John Quilt
was gifted a goal on a silver platter in each half to ensure
that the Alliance championship will now be decided upon the
final day of the season. However, the visitor's rear guard also
appeared less than comfortable on occasions and were eventually
forced to survive a nervy final ten minutes after the Pic's
pulled a goal back through their own top scorer Kirk Maragh.

TEAM COME FROM BEHIND FOR COMPREHENSIVE WIN |
| |
The
first team travelled to Boldmere St Michaels in an Alliance
encounter and were forced to come from 2-1 behind early in the
second half to record a comprehensive 4-2 victory at Church
Road. Rushall took a 6th minute lead through Kirk Maragh, but
were pegged back midway through the first period before falling
behind early in the second half. However, an own goal from defender
Price just prior to the hour mark gave the visitors an unlikely
life line, before strikes in the 80th and 85th minutes from
Kirk Maragh and Mark Holdcroft wrapped up all three points for
the Pic's. Click

TEAM ROUND OFF HOME CAMPAIGN WITH EXCELLENT HOME WIN |
| |
The
youth team entertained Gresley Rovers in the final home game
of their Midland Floodlit Youth League Western Division campaign
as the Pic's recorded an excellent 3-0 victory to boost their
placing in the table. Goals from Darrius Bassett, James Francis
and Craig Turton (from Rushall Olympic’s U-16's side) eased
Rushall to a convincing win as the U-18's played arguably some
of their best football of the season with Liam Givens, in particular,
catching the eye.

TEAM GET END OF SEASON FEVER IN DRAB DRAW |
| |
The
first team entertained Oldbury United in a typically uninspring
end-of-season Alliance encounter and were eventually fortuntate
to earn a 1-1 draw after taking a 10th minute lead thanks to
a powerful header from Steve McCartan's corner and then proceeded
to allow their guests back into the game. Oldbury had to wait
until the 81st to capitilise on their hosts apparent generosity
when Ben Smith needlessly hacked down an opponent in the box
and Les Palmer slotted the resulting penalty kick home past
the unluck Danny Watson, who managed to get a hand to the ball.

impressive Leicestershire opponents. The visitors snatched the
winner in the 70th minute when Craig Noble was allowed to head
home totally unmarked from close range. However, Rushall were
left infuriated ten minutes from full time as they were denied
a perfectly legitimate penalty when Aaron Bishop was blatantly
tripped in the Quorn penalty area. Apart from the referee, the
visitors also had to thank their custodian Matt Nurse for keeping
Rushall at bay several times throughout the contest. Click

TEAM DENT STRATFORD'S TITLE CREDENTIALS |
| |
The
first team entertained second placed Stratford Town in a Midland
Football Alliance fixture and stormed to a hugely deserved 3-2
victory to dent the high flying Warwickshire outfits title hopes
- thanks to a fine brace from striker Kirk Maragh. Rushall opened
their account on 18 minutes when Kirk Maragh converted Mark
Holdcroft's corner, but the visitors bounced back with an equalising
goal four minutes later. After the interval it was Stratford's
turn to surge ahead, but within two minutes of going behind
the Mark Holdcroft-Kirk Maragh combination proved too hot for
the guests to handle. Rushall's winner came five minutes from
the end of normal time when substitute Neil Hesson scored his
first goal for the club. Click

The

Dave Read's powerful header and Sol Griffiths' close range conversion.
The visitors pulled an early goal back after the break as home
defender Rory McFarlane could only help the ball home into his
own net during an attempted clearance. However, further strikes
from Sol Griffiths (his fifth goal in three games) and Neil
Hesson sealed a comprehensive victory for the Pic's.

| |
The
first team travelled to high flying neighbours Willenhall Town
in the Polymac Services League Cup 2nd Round and recorded an
excellent 1-0 victory to progress through to the Quarter-Final
stage of the competition. The decisive goal came on 18 minutes
when good work by Greg Walters down the right flank saw him
centre for Aaron Bishop who rose majestically above the Reds
defence to powerfully head home into the bottom left corner
from eight yards. A tremendous defensive display from the Dales
Lane side, coupled with some effective counter attacking eventually
saw Olympic through, despite being subjected to some heavy pressure
from Willenhall late on as they reverted to a 3-3-4 formation.

TEAM BOOSTED BY FOUR STAR STRIKER |

The
first team entertained Ludlow Town in a Midland Football Alliance
fixture and surged into a 4-1 interval lead thanks to a vintage
four goal burst from front runner Mark Holdcroft. The Rushall
striker slotted home in the 3rd minute and curled in a beauty
of free-kick from the edge of the box a minute later, before
completing his hat-trick on 17 minutes by clinically rifling
home from ten yards. Sloppy defending gave the visitors a life
line two minutes later, before Mark Holdcroft netted his fourth
in the 34th minute. The visitors pulled another goal back just
before the hour mark and Olympic were made to sweat in a grand
finale as Ludlow grabbed a third goal with three minutes remaining
thanks to more defensive errors. However, despite the referee
finding over six minutes of injury time from somewhere, the
Pic's held on to claim three important points. Click
